ULTIMATE EXOTICNESS.
By Winy Maas

SUDAPAN
The attempt to make a thought out future for the Caribbean bay and especially this Yucatan area deserves attention:
The enormous tourist developments can – after a period of flourishing- easily harm the area.
How can it learn from other tourist enterprises as Costa Iberica or Croatia?
How can it combine a certain authenticity with generic developments?
How can the local economy be supported with a global “ab-usage” of the area?
On the other hand it can explore as well on the possibilities for a new exoticism. Where holidays to far away destinations were in the past about exoticness, now this word has lost its meaning for a lot of people do to globalization, mass traveling and mass tourism.
Maybe we are spoiled...
According to French philosophers exoticness is vital to compensate our daily behavior and relativize ourselves. In that sense a re-definition of exoticness is needed:
What kind of new exoticness can be created?????

SUDAPAN 1. A postscript
By Jose Castillo

Like all good competitions this first (and certainly not the last) edition of Sudapan has raised  a number of issues which far exceed the scope of the proposals themselves.
We have seen in these past few weeks, remarkable architectures, plans, strategies, manifestoes and political statements. They’ve come in the form of rhetoric, diagrams, drawings, renders, graphs and plans. In other words and what we found fascinating in the submittals is that the multiplicity of issues present in tourism have been addressed without prejudices by the participants, suspending judgments, but also taking positions and thinking them through coherent and complex arguments.

In the discussion amongst jurors, and in the presentation of those arguments, there have been spaces for agreement and disagreement, and the range of the selected and awarded projects is evidence of the diverse aesthetic and ideological agendas and choices.

The competition results also leave room for optimism in recognizing that maybe it is through the spatial and temporal practices of tourism that the social, the political, the economic, the environmental, the territorial and the formal can be reinvented. In other words, it seems that there is nothing more global, more contemporary and more relevant nowadays than tourism itself.

Finally, and this is something we should thank the organizers, is that the Sudapan competition has allowed both jurors and competitors to subvert, transform, expand and even co-opt supersdaca’s agenda. “Todos somos sudacas!” or “We are all sudacas” seems to be a foregone conclusion.

A bright beginning indeed…

JURY COMMENTS

72344 Supertourism*

One of the most comprehensive, complete and elaborate proposals altogether. I see an overall conceptual understanding of the phenomenon of tourism, its different scales, and issues. There is a combination of articial and natural, specific and strategic, tools and projects which seems very real. I also found the overall unmoralistic environmental agenda evident in some of the specific projects interesting; somewhere in between Jules Verne and Bucky Fuller
José Castillo

I dont understad it completely. But it has some nice ideas: especially to use the exotism aspect of tourism but in its purest and most imaginative character: to make more hyper exotic beautiful experiences. Bold and beuatiful.
Winy Maas

Devices. Approach to the functional appropriation of a place with light devices, created at man-scale.
Vicente Guallart

1f382 Instant strip

The boats for the coast. A nice and symbolic idea to make a cemetery of cruise boats before the coast that protects the forests of colonization, that concentrates the tourists on where they want to go to and that iconofies the absurdist aspect of touristic developments.
Winy Maas

Boats. Enjoying the coast from boats, with specific designs. Closer to the architectonic benefit, than to navigation.
Vicente Guallart

05417 SUPER-INCLUSIVE

Out of the social-political statements/proposals, I think this one is one of the better developed, since it assumes that Tourism can become a new social protocol or tool for negotiation. I find it interesting because of the alliances it seeks to create, spatially, temporally and programmatically. It is true that the ambiguity of the architectures can be deceiving, but by focusing on the ‘voices’ and the protocols, I do think it addresses the issue of a wider ‘democratic’ and ‘environmental’ net to be cast by the practice of tourism development.
José Castillo

Sustainability and consumption are combined in a new touristic environment. As case, one of the existing cities along the coast is presented at a convincing level. By doing this, the proposal gains reality. The integral approach by which scales are reconciled is successful.
Carel Weeber

ad234 REEF COAST

Innovative and singular anti-island proposal. Combines linear development with off-shore development. Somewhere in-between  the Maldives and Dubai…It has certain naiveté with regards to the urban morphology (linear city vs. cluster), but I think it’s one of the proposals which explores the issue of evolution over time, incrementalism and territoriality in an intelligent fashion. It kind of reminds me as well of a tropicalization of Tange’s proposal for Tokyo Bay. Infrastructure+the urbanization of leisure.
José Castillo

The artificial reef coast. A dreamy proposal and maybe too expensive and therefore impossible. But the idea to add reefs that can position and absorb all program is great. It gives more reefs, more buildable areas, more waterfronts, more fishes, more diving, more protection and it saves the forests from being urbanized.
So: make it! But, oh, how to pay?
Winy Maas

094df BEYOND THE LOOKING GLASS

Radically different from most of the other proposals. I find it at the same time innocent yet poetic, naïve, yet critical. A commentary on the self-reflecting narcissim of tourism as-we-know-it. At the same time the connection with avant-garde precedents (from Algiers to OMA) is strangely refreshing in the context of a tropical environment…
José Castillo

The wall. An architectural proposal. It wants to concentrate all possible and expected developments in one dramatically small zone. Thus keeping the forest and the beach empty. It can thus make a beautiful and courageous ‘wall’ that memorizes le Corbusier’s Algiers proposals and Rugen. Why not an extra one?
Winy Maas

7c83e Hypermangrove

The plea for a giant forest that should be protected and developed is needed and it is highly atractive. It enlarges the recognizabilty and speciality of the area in a competitive global playround. It thus menages the potential of the area. And it allows for an exotic infill....
Winy Maas

77138 every man’s land

Umbrellas. Creation of very specific architecture, for very specific places. Very singular, organic and self-sufficient. New natures.
Vicente Guallart

16e5a “No-City”

Riviera Maya is supplied by elegant constructions perpendicular to the coastline, connected by infrastructure. By doing this an one open relation between the sea and inner land is maintained. These are particularly rewarding images.
Carel Weeber

71a0a all aboard

An obvious proposal. But it is the only one that puts a public means of infrastructure on the foregrond. It claims for a linear exploaitation as we know from Belgium or Spain.  It emphasizes the romantic aspect of traveling
Winy Maas

505d7 artificial islands-artificial experiences

Interesting development of a type that combines island+building. It reminded me simultaneously of Lebbeus Woods and Zeebruge. There is a serious attempt to imagine possible architectures for new territorial occupations, and I find the scale and some of the spatial relationships interesting enough.
José Castillo

Islands. Creation of artificial structures for the development of artifciales activities on a territory. Suitable scale
Vicente Guallart

9d7fd  dynamic coalition

Light Train. Insertion of a linear elevated  transport system, taking advantage of the territorial structure configuration.
Vicente Guallart

2e01b INSTANT HEAVEN

Atols and towers. A beautiful proposal to skip the strip and transform it into a zone with singular elements, that stresses the beauty of the landscapes: architectural atols on the sea, architectural hills in the forest.. I like it.
Winy Maas

10424 LANDSCAPE PLOTTER

One of the strongest graphic articulations of an argument in the competition. At moments it seems that by avoiding frontally the issue of tourism development, there is an alternative for urban and territorial development. Even though the issue of the pueblos could even be read as nostalgic, it seems well understood and developed in contemporary living terms. It also seems to combine well infrastructural issues with sociopolitical ones.
José Castillo

70b76 Melting Pot

This critical strip story emphasizes the threat for future existence of the local population and their historical monuments, caused by international tourism. It does not get to planning or strategies; its power is its imagery.
Carel Weeber

f3e6a pasajes virgenes

Green strips. A simple but sympathetic idea. And one that should be easy to achieve: a series of green virgin forest strips that open the sea front an keep public connections between the sea and the inland.
Why not doing this minimally?
Winy Maas

1467b RAÍCES

The coastline is supplied by a zoned citybeld in which different functions and interest have been organized. The Indian monuments are integrated in this new urban structure. The high planning character puts the question on how this all can be realized.
Carel Weeber

9fe11 Recombinant Tourism

Prototypes. Intelligent prototypes development for the insertion of tourism activities that interact with local synergies
Vicente Guallart

3f398 Recuperando el territorio

One of the few entries in which planning-data is input for integral development. However it does not succeed to connect these data with planning and suddenly it jumps into goals.
Carel Weeber

3f949 RESPONSIBLE / EXTREME TOURISMS

I found it a pre-spatial but quite sophisticate understanding of both trends in tourism, but also of the trade-offs. It’s the equivalent of a ‘third-way’ tourism, or knowing how to pick your battles. Rather than focusing on resolving ‘all the issues’, it works from two ends, responsibility and extreme experiences. The ‘architectures’ seem only as possibilities or intuitions, but the diagnosis or understanding of the condition seems strong enough for me to warrant discussion.
José Castillo

Making a difference between sorts of tourism, part of it moves offshore. It creates space on land. By zoning, room for the local population becomes available. The question remains whether building in sea is desirable along this coast.
Carel Weeber

6d027 The ends justify the means

‘Learning from Pompei’ could have been another title of this entry. By introducing factor time, a temporal freedom of acting mutes after a period of time into developments useful for local population. Risk and optimism are combined.
Carel Weeber

58370 WHERE NEXT?

Disneyfication or ecotourism? This entry is a plea for the second and proposes four models for development along this coast. However, how this can be achieved remains unclear. The global approach is interesting.
Carel Weeber
